Parking Downtown St Cloud for Scooters/MC

Postby Barb » Tue Oct 28, 2008 10:20 pm

In case anyone is interested in this: I work downtown St Cloud and so I have been talking to the city about contract parking options for scooters/motorcycles. There are some cheap (illegal) parking options around but I know these will disappear as scooters become more popular here, as they have in many major cities (ie, police will start to enforce the law). The City of St Cloud is trying to come up with some options for scooter/MC parking before Spring. A lot of people where I work (county) ride them, but end up paying for a parking space in the county or city lots, which doesn't seem right, because its the same price as for a car...there is no incentive to be green and take up less space. Anyway, I the City is considering a cheaper parking contract in the new parking garage for MC/scooters..or some option for people who work downtown and ride every day. I have a voicemail from Steve Gates from the City engineering office, after I wrote to the City Council last week. I plan to call him back tomorrow. If anyone has any feedback on this issue, or works downtown and has ideas of how to provide a lower cost option for scooters to park downtown, let me know, or contact the City, or George Hontos on the City Council. They are very open to this feedback right now. Thanks.

Barb, thanks for doing this. Many people have the potential of benefitting in the future from what you're doing right now. Kudos to you!

Tell us how things progress and if there are ways the scooter community can make its local voice heard.

Now is a time when both the City of St Cloud engineering office and city council are addressing scooter/motorcycle parking, so if anyone has concerns about parking within the city, including in city owned lots/facilities, now is the time to contact the city council or Steve Gates, city engineer.

My contact on the city council was George Hontos, who seemed quite responsive. But I know they are making some decisions before Spring so if you have ideas or unmet needs, now is the time to be heard.

I dn't work downtown, but where i work, we have a special scooter parking lot-maybe downtown can do the same-and charge cheaper, because many scooters could fit in a smaller lot.

I've worked/parked downtown for years. It's pretty easy to find an out of the way place to park your scooter. Never got a ticket from St. Cloud. I think parking should be free for scooters as an extra incentive for ppl to drive them. Park in a alley or next to a tree somewhere, the cops will never stop to give you ticket if its not in the way. SCSU's policy is that if it has moped plates you can park in the bike racks, motorcycle plates you can't. However mine has motorcycle plates and I park wherever, never got a ticket. If I did get a ticket I would argue it.
